～およそ製造されてから一年経過したマラードはどのように変化したのか？～

What season does The Mallard show?

～What does it taste like? Around 1 year has passed since it was produced～

バージニア葉は、面白い。後味に爽やかさを伴う場合があるからである。エイジング最大のリスクであり最大の魅力は、実際に喫煙するまで、どのように味わいが変化しているかを知ることが出来ないことである。だが傾向としては、バージニア葉のみのブレンドの方が、バージニア葉とペリクのブレンドよりも熟成のスピードが格段に遅い。

Virginia leaves are fantastic. Because sometimes they make me feel refreshing note. Aging has risks. Nobody can expect what it tastes or what it changes. According to my experiment of aging and process of fermentation, "virginia only" is slower than "vaper" blend aka virginia and perique blend.

製造されてから凡そ一年経過したマラードを試してみる。当店がこのマラードを仕入れたのは2020年7月20日のこと。ダンタバコで製造され、その後に柘製作所によって輸入された。そう考えれば、製造されて凡そ一年経過していることになる。

In this blog, I would like to note what The Mallard has changed through around 1 year. Our shop bought this tobacco on 20th July 2020. This tobacco was made by Dan Tobacco, then imported by Tsuge Pipe Company. So it means that 1 year has passed since this tin was produced. 

マラードの缶を見てみよう。カモが水辺で泳ぎながらこちらを横目で見ている。その後ろには黄菖蒲なのか葉の様子が見受けられる。因みに、黄菖蒲の開花時期は4月から6月と言われている。だが、パッケージデザインを見るかぎり、花の様子は描かれていない。よってこのパッケージデザインは7月から8月頃の様子なのか。

Let's check the package design of The Mallard. A mallard is staring at me while floating on a pond. At the back of it, there are leaves of yellow iris, I guess. Yellow iris starts to produce its flowers from April to June, however there are no flowers in the package design. So this picture shows mallard in summer, around July to August?

 缶を開けると、完熟トマトを思わせる香りと僅かに漂うヨーグルトを思わせるアロマ。作りたての頃よりも、熟成は進んでいると感じられる。スマホのライト当てると、僅かであるがバージニア葉に含まれる糖分が結晶化していることに気付く。

Tin note is well matured tomato flavour with a hint of yogurt. Thanks to the photo light of my smart-phone, I found quite a few but there was  some crystallized sugar on the leaves.

着火すると感じるのは優しい甘さと後味の爽やかさ。檸檬を思わせる爽やかさに等しい。後味の爽やかさは甘さをすっきりとさせてくれるので、飽きることなく味わえる。中盤から後半にかけて甘さが強くなるが、それでも爽やかさを感じさせてくれる。比較的ミディアムな味わいなので、時間帯問わずに愉しめる。

From the 1st puff, the sweetness of virginia is so gentle and the refreshing note is like lemon in aftertaste. From the half of the bowl to the end, the sweetness stands out but the refreshing aroma works as a supporting actor. This tobacco is medium so I can enjoy it no matter when.

この爽やかな後味はこれからの季節にちょうど良いと思う。よってマラードが「季語」として示す季節は夏なのではないか、と考える。個人的には気温が下がり始めた日没後、キンキンに冷やした麦茶を片手に味わいたい。

The refreshing note in the aftertaste is good for this season, summer. So I think The Mallard shows summer. In my opinion, I would like to enjoy this blend with a glass of cold barley tea after sunset.
