好きなバージニアブレンドの手巻きたばこ、スリーセイルズが欠品してしまった。しっかりとしたニコチンの強さ、そして、どこか懐かしさを思い起こさせる味わい。バージニアブレンドの手巻きたばこは色々あるけれど、正直言うて代替品になりえるものが存在しない(私の味覚ではの話)。一体、どうすれば良いんだろう？？？………

One of my favourite blends, Three Sails, is right now out of stock. It has strong nicotine and it makes me nostalgic. Although there are lots of virginia blends, nothing is an alternative one(in my opinion). What should I do?

私はこういう状況に巡りあったとき、必ず下記のことを重要視する。

・ニコチンの強さが似ていること。

・そのたばこの味わいが醸し出す世界観が似ていること。

I always look for an alternative one based on 2 points.

・The strength of nicotine is similar.

・The image or the story which the hand rolling tobacco shows through 1 piece of rolled cigarette is similar.

この2つの条件を満たすためには、必ずしもブレンド内容が同一とは限らない。むしろ違う場合がある。というのも、ブレンド内容が同一の場合、ちょっとした配合比の違いやバージニア葉のカテゴリーの違いで、全く違う世界を描いてしまうからである。そんな訳で、意外なたばこが代替品になるのではとふと考えたのである。

Same blend does not always mean to cover these points. I think you may feel each taste is totally different. Because each has different compounding raios, and different types of virginia leaves. That's why I wanna try "something new".

私が知る限り、現在在庫としてある手巻きたばこの銘柄の中に、スリーセイルズと味わいが似ているものは存在しない。では、「手巻きたばこ」という枠を越えてはどうだろう、と考えた。

In my opinion, there is no alternative to Three Sails in hand rolling tobacco. Hence I think that I should go beyond hand rolling tobacco.

手巻きたばことして味わえそうなものは何だろう……喜世留ではないか。

What kinds of tobacco can I roll?………Is kizami tobacco for kiseru?

とあることがきっかけで、小粋・松川刻の味わいをマイ煙管でチェックしていた時にそう思い立ったのである(このきっかけについては後日のブログのネタと致します)。小粋・松川刻は、珍しい国内在来種のたばこ葉である「松川葉」を使用している。燃焼温度で味わいが変わってしまう位繊細な煙。小粋・松川刻は、通常の小粋よりも若干刻みが荒い。よって、通常の小粋よりも巻きやすい様に思える。しかし、手巻きたばこと比べると、刻みが細かいので燃焼速度が幾分速いと思われる。そこで、若干厚めの巻き紙「ジグザグ・グリーン」を使用することにした。煙の味わいをしっかりと感じる為に、ロールフィルターを用いることにする。ドローが良くなるので燃焼温度を調整しやすい。

The idea has popped into my head when I try to smoke Koiki Matsukawa Kizami to prepare another blog. Matsukawa Kizami is a straight blend of Matsukawa leaves. Matsukawa leaves are domestic leaves. They have a sensitive taste, so you should take care to keep the combustion temperature low. Kizami tobacco burns faster than hand rolling tobacco, so I would like to use medium burning paper "Zig-Zag Green". To feel the full taste of tobacco leaves, "roll filter" is good. Plus, it's easier to control the temperature.

スリムにしては、やや多い位の葉を取り出す。崩れないように優しく解しながら、タイトめかつ若干ふんわり感あるように巻き上げる。着火は勿論、マッチを用いて遠火で。クールスモーキングを心がけてゆったりと喫煙すると広がる、芳醇な甘味と上品なアロマはどこか懐かしい感じがした。江戸時代から受け継がれている伝統に、思わず納得してしまう。しっかりとしたニコチンの強さはこの一本に充分な満足感を与えてくれる。燃焼温度が上がると辛さが出やすいのは、糖度が高いからではと思う。繊細なたばこなので平常心。急ぎ足は禁物。

I pick up a lot of tobacco and roll tightly, but not too tight, then set a roll filter, its diameter is around 6mm so it's like a slim size. Lighting up with a match, of course I keep "distance". Then I smoke very slowly. The sweetness of the leaves and its elegant aroma made me feel nostalgic. Matsukawa leaves have a history of more than 400 years. The strong nicotine gives me satisfaction. In my opinion, it's because of its high percentage of sugar, high combustion temperature leads to tongue bite. This tobacco is so sensitive. Not to hurry, keep relaxed.

しっかりとしたニコチンの強さ、そして、そのたばこが描く世界観。スリーセイルズと小粋・松川刻は、お国も違うしそもそも手巻きたばこと刻みたばこという点で、全く異なる。それなのに、似ている。たばこという嗜好品の深さは時に感動を与えてくれる。

The strong nicotine, and the story which tobacco leaves show through 1 rolled cigarette. Although Three Sails and Koiki Matsukawa Kizami are totally different types of tobacco, different countries of origin, they are similar. Tobacco is so fun. Sometimes they give a strong impression.
