The best way to have zesty smoke with Rattray's Stirling Flake.

このたばこは、ニコチンがかなり強い。一枚のフレイクを折り畳んで喫煙すると、かなり時間がかかる。通常、バージニアベースのブレンドのフレイクであれば、喫煙時間が2時間半位かかる。しかし、この銘柄の場合3時間半以上かかってしまう。前述の通り、ニコチンが強いので体力が続かない。

This blend has strong nicotine and it takes so much time to smoke. Normally, I smoke virginia based flake tobacco for 2 and a half hours. On the other hand, it takes more than 3 and a half hours to smoke Stirling Flake. I often quit cuz my vigor is not so big.

そもそも一体何故この銘柄は喫煙時間がかかってしまうのか。これを分析する必要がある。この銘柄の特徴は、バージニア葉、バーレー葉、ケンタッキー葉が等しい割合でブレンドされていることである。

Why does it take so long to smoke this blend? First of all, let me remember what this blend is. This tobacco is a blend of virginia, burley, and kentucky. This blend contains the same quantity of each leaf.

バーレー葉やケンタッキー葉は、バージニア葉と比べると繊維がスカスカである。つまり、密度が低いのである。故に、プレスして熟成させると、かなり圧縮されると言える。つまり、そのような製造工程を経て作られたフレイク1枚は、たばこ葉がかなり圧縮された状態なのである。

Burley and kentucky are totally different from virginia leaves in density. Their density is lower than virginia. So when they are pressed into a cake, then sliced into flakes, the density of the flake is higher than other flakes. 

よって、バーレー葉やケンタッキー葉の割合が多いパイプたばこのフレイク1枚は、バージニア葉のみのブレンドのものと比べると、内容が濃いのである。そう考えると、説明がつく。このスターリングフレイクを着火させると、たばこ葉の盛り上がり方が通常よりも大きい。さらに、燃え方がかなりゆったりとしているように感じる。

So I think that this tobacco has a deep and rich character. After lighting up a bowl, tobacco in the chamber often rises up, so tamper work is needed. Plus, this blend burns very slowly.

要するに、バージニア葉のみのブレンドのフレイクを1枚喫煙するときと同様な吸い方では、多すぎるのである。私は通常、ボウルの直径の2倍弱の横幅にボウルの深さの2倍弱の縦幅の大きさのフレイクを使用することが、最良な喫煙方法であると解釈している。

In short, it's too much to pack "a sliced flake as same as virginia blend" into a bowl. I think that the best way to use flakes is to pack them based on a size like this…, 【around double the size of the depth of the chamber 】× 【almost double the diameter of the chamber】.

しかし、このスターリングフレイクは稀な例外である。そこで、ボウルの直径及びボウルの深さと同等弱のフレイクを詰めてみよう。そして、ボウルに詰める時に向きを逆にしてみよう。タンパーで程よい固さになるまで表面を平たく整える。すると、この時点でたばこ葉が凡そ5分目までに詰まっているだろう。あとは火種になりやすいように、少量細かいたばこ葉をやさしめに押し込む。最終的に約6分目までにたばこ葉が詰まっている状況になる。

However, this blend, Rattray's Stirling Flake, is one exception. So, let's use a flake which has the same size as the depth of the chamber, and diameter of it. Then pack them upside-down. Use tamper to get tobacco flat.  Probably, there is a room about 50％ of the chamber. Then finally, pack well rubbed tobacco into the chamber. I guess tobacco is filled 60％ of the bowl.

こうすることで、全体的な喫煙時間が2時間弱で済む。さらに言えば、ニコチンの強さも良い塩梅で燃焼温度のコントロールも容易い。夕食後、好きなお酒を片手に映画を鑑賞しながら喫煙するには丁度良い。

In total, it takes 1 and a half hours to 2 hours. More over, it's easy to control combustion temperature with comfortable amount of nicotine. It's a wonderful time to smoke Stirling Flake in this way with a glass of whiskey and a film, don't you think so?
