何故サミュエルガーウィズのフレイクはオーバーウェットなのか？？

Why all of Samuel Gawith's flakes are over wet?

イギリスの老舗パイプたばこメーカー、サミュエルガーウィズに焦点を当ててみる。というのもサミュエルガーウィズのフレイクはどれも、他のメーカーのものよりもオーバーウエット気味だからだ。大学時代にパイプと出会いはまって以来ずっと疑問に思っていたのだ。

In this article, I would like to focus on Samuel Gawith's flake. It because all of them are more ove wet than other flakes. I started to smoke pipe when I was university student. Since then, I wondered why.

そもそも、オーバーウエットだとかなり面倒なことが起こる。一度、喫煙する分取り出し少し乾燥させてからでないとなかなか着火が難しい。かといって乾燥しすぎると、オーバーヒートしやすくなってしまう。正直、ほんの一時間、二時間程度じゃなかなかちょうど良い湿度にはならない。

As you know, over wet is trouble some. It's difficult to light them up hence you have to get them "lil'" dry. However dry too much leads over heat. Just few hours never solve this problem.

ここで、サミュエルガーウィズの商品を思い浮かべてみる。パッケージデザインが何かしら屋外の様子を描いたものが多い。四季シリーズはもちろん、ボシーフレイクは寂しげな小屋等々。ん？ってことはこれらのたばこを自宅で吸うことはこれらのたばこにとって本望ではないということなのか？つまり、屋外の様子を描いたパッケージのものは屋外で吸うべきなのか？

Let's take a look at each package design of Samuel Gawith. Lots of them are view of outdoor. For example, Four seasons or Bothy Flake. I thought that these tobacco should be smoke at outdoor, not in my room.

気になったらいてもたってもいられない性分なので、思わず休日を利用してパイプがおいしく吸える風景を求めて旅に出たのである(笑)

ここで、ひとつの仮説をたてた。

「朝イチで旅に出る直前、フレイクを吸いたい分取り出しジャケットのポケットに入れて持ち運び、半日後良い風景と共に吸うとちょうどいいのではないか。」

I couldn't stop thinking about it. So I decided to go out to trip looking for wonderful view to smoking pipe in my holiday. I set hypothesis: It's great humidity if I take 1 or 2 flake in to my side pocket of jacket then smoke after half day with wonderful view.

猛暑がつづいていたので、どこか涼しい場所に行きたいと思っていた。ふと、湖の近くならばパイプがおいしく吸えてかつ、涼しいのではないかとひらめいた。という訳で、バスで行くことにしたのである。

These days Tokyo was too much hot so I wanted to go to somewhere so cool. I thought near a lake was better so I decided to go there by bus.

余りにも暑くてジャケットを来ていられないので、出かける直前、吸いたい分のフレイクをパイプバッグのサイドポケットにいれることにした。

Today was too hot to wear jacket. So I put 2 flakes into side pocket of my pipe bag.

さぁ、検証の始まりである。

Let's start to trip.

目的地は河口湖。というのも河口湖はその風景だけでなく、天気の良い日だと富士山が見えるからだ。

Destination is Kawaguchi Lake. Because there are wonderful view not only lake but also Mt. Fuji if it's sunny.

河口湖駅でバスを降り、徒歩で約20分。看板等を見て、特に禁煙というルールーが無さそうであることを確認した。時間は丁度気温が下がり、過ごしやすい夕方である。

なるべく人のいない岩場を見つけ、サイドポケットに入れておいたたばこを取り出す。

I got off a bus at Kawaguchi Lake Station, walked for 20 minutes. I checked signs and found it was ok to smoke. It was evening. Nice temperature to smoke pipe.

I found nice to smoke 'cause there was no people but for me. I took 1 flake from side pocket.

ちょうど良いではないか。少し湿り気が残っている。これならばオーバーヒートならないだろう。

What a nice condition! It looks lil bit wet but easy to light them up. No worries about over heat.

折り畳んで詰めて早速着火。

I did fold and stuff method then light 'em up.

うまい！湖の水の音。鳥の鳴き声。そして雄大な景色。たばこをサイドポケットに入れて半日過ごしたお陰で、たばこの湿度が丁度良い具合になっている。

Wonderful taste! Nice sound from lake, birds are singing beautiful view of lake and Mt. Fuji. I have left 2 flake at side pocket about half day. Its humidity is perfect.

サミュエルガーウィズのフレイクが他のメーカーのものよりもオーバーウエット気味なのは、フレイクの携帯しやすさを最大に生かす為だった。っと勝手に解釈してみた(笑)

The reason why Samuel Gawith's flake are wet is that easy to carry and smoke it outside. That's what I thought ;-)
