ずっと気になっていたことがある。個人的に、キャビーズミクスチャーはパイプたばこの中でも最も好きなブレンドのひとつだ。カットは崩れ気味のコインカットでブレンドはバージニアとペリク。なんといってもパッケージが渋くてカッコイイ。キャビーとは乗り合い馬車をさし、英語でタクシーという意味を持つcabの語源になった。

Recently I always have one question. In my opinion, Cabbies Mixture from Samuel Gawith is one of my favourite pipe tobacco. It's lil' broken coin cut and blend is virginia and perique. Especially, its package design is so cool! "Cabbie" is a word which is an origin of a word "Cab".

パッケージの絵柄をみると、ご婦人が馬車から降りている様子で、その奥に運転手(おっさん)がいる。よく見るとおっさんは下を向いている。いったい何をしているのか？？このたばこを初めて喫煙して以来、ずっと気になっていた。

Let's take a look at the package. A lady is getting of from a cabbie while a driver is looking down. What is he doing? I've had a question about it since first time to smoke it.

まず、絵柄を全体的に見ると暗い。昼間ではなさそうだ。日の入り後ということになる。そう考えると、この絵の中のご婦人はおっさんにとって最後のお客様であると考えられる。ご婦人は馬車を降りようとしているのでもうお代済みの様だ。

ということはおっさんにとってはその日の仕事が終わったも同然である。では、本題にもどろうか。下を向いて何しているのか。よく見ると両手がふさがれている。つまり、両手を使って何かをしているようだ。この時代のビジネスマンは懐中時計を持っていたらしい。もし懐中時計を見ていたとすればかなり不自然である。というのも懐中時計を見ていたとすれば片手で済むはずであるからだ。注意深く見ると、左手でなにかを持ち、右手の親指でなにかを詰めている様に見える。このおっさんはパイプスモーカーで、自分の好きなパイプたばこを詰めているのではないか？このパッケージがパイプたばこのパッケージであることを考えると、尚更そう思えてくる。

In this situation, his job is done almost. he says himself "Let's call it a day!" I guess. Let's go back to the question. What is he doing while looking down? Look at his hands, he is doing something with his both hands. Is he looking at pocket watch? Answer is no. If so, only one hand is enough. パッケージの暗さ、おっさんが仕事を終えている状況からこのたばこは夕方から夜にかけて吸うもの、つまりある程度強いたばこであること物語ろうとしている。要はパッケージのデザインを通してこのたばこはどのようなたばこなのかを伝えようとしているのだ。サミュエルガーウィズのパッケージデザインはどれも素晴らしいもので、実際の味わいとパッケージデザインがリンクしているように感じる。信じるか信じないかはあなた次第。
