パイプたばこの味わいと食事は似ている。パイプたばこを知らない方や、初心者の方に味わいの説明をする際、よく日本食に例えて話をする。というのも日本食は私たち日本人にとって身近であるからだ。

Taste of pipe tobacco is similar to food. I often liken them to Japanese food, when I have to explain them to person who is not pipe smoker or beginner. It because Japan food is familiar for us.

一方で、日本に観光のためにいらっしゃった外国人に日本の食文化を説明することはかなり難しい。しかし、その外国人がパイプスモーカーの場合説明が楽になる。というのもパイプたばこの味わいは彼らにとって身近なものだからだ。

On the other hand, it's difficult to explain Japanese culture and food to people from other country, however, if they are pipe smokers, it would be easier to tell them a detail about it. 'Cause it's so familiar for them to taste pipe tobacco.

今回のブログのテーマは二つある。ひとつ「私たち日本人にとって身近な日本食を通してパイプたばこを理解しよう」ということ。もうひとつは、「パイプスモーカーである外国人にとって身近なパイプたばこを通して日本食を理解しよう」ということである。その謂わば第一章である。

This blog has two themes. One is "Let's learn about pipe tobacco through Japanese food which is familiar for us(Japanese)". The other is "Let's learn about Japanese food through pipe tobacco which is familiar for pipe smokers all over the world." This is a chapter 1.

バージニア葉はパイプたばこのなかでも最も重要な葉のひとつだ。様々なブレンドのベースになっている。その味わいの魅力はなんだろうか。自然な甘さである。

ベースを食事に置き換えると何になるだろうか。主食である。私たち日本人にとっての主食はお米だ。口に含んだ瞬間、お米に含まれるデンプンが唾液と混ざり糖分に変化する。故に甘く感じる。

Virginia leaf is one of the most important leaf. It is often used as a base of blend. What is a great point of it? It's natural sweetness.

"Base" is like staple food. Our staple food is rice. Once put them in a mouth, starch of rice mixes with saliva then changes into sugar. That's why we feel sweet.

ところで、私が今喫煙しているキャビースミクスチャーにはバージニア以外にペリクが含まれている。このペリクがあるお陰でバージニアの甘さが際立つ。だからおいしく感じるのだ。このペリクを日本食に置き換えるとなんだろう。そう、漬物である。漬物のスパイシーさと塩分がお米の甘さを引き立てているのだ。故に日本食の朝食において欠かせないのであろう。

By the way, I am right now smoking Cabbies Mixture from Samuel Gawith. It is a blend of virginia and PERIQUE. Perique helps to make sweetness of virginia stand out. That's why I love it. In my opinion, perique is similar to Japanese pickles. Spicy and salty taste of pickle leads gentle sweetness of rice. That's why we often eat rice with them.
