Aesthetics value of a secret ingredient

パイプに関する不思議について思ったことをエッセイ風に書く、誠にしょうもない企画。お陰様で早いもんで第三弾でございます。今回のテーマは「魅せない美学～その1～」。今回のテーマでは、パイプたばこに関しまして私が感じたことをありのままに書いてしまおう、そういう企画でございます。このブログは筆者自身の考えに基づいているのであくまで参考程度にお読み頂けたら幸いです。

This article is part 3 of "mysterious things about pipe". I would like to write "aesthetics value of a secret ingredient". I would like to focus on pipe tobacco. This article is based on writer's thinking and prejudice, just for reference purposes only.

ソラーニ・エイジド・バーレーフレイク。このたばこは、バーレーベースの珍しいブレンドなのです。バージニア本来の甘さを主張するものやラタキアのスモーキーさを推すブレンドが多い中で、この製品は異質な存在と言えます。私自身このたばこはお気に入りの一つなので、「エイちゃん」とニックネームで呼んでおります。

Solani Aged Burley Flake.

This tobacco is a blend of burley, kentucky and virginia. It's such a rare tobacco because there are lots of virginia blends or English blends which contain latakia, however this blend is burley based tobacco. This tobacco is one of my favourite, I call it "A-chan" as a nickname.

豊かな土壌を連想させるバーレーの渋味。そのお陰なのか若干フローラルに感じるケンタッキーの味わい(それでもたばこならではの強い味わいを感じますが…)。そして、バックグラウンドに感じるバージニアの甘味。

Earthy and bitter burley, lil bit floral (but it has a strong taste of tobacco) kentucky, and, in the background, sweetness of virginia…

一服の煙のうち幾つかが鼻腔を抜けるとき、「隠し味」の存在にふと気がつく。隠し味は隠れていてこそ、本領を発揮するのです。要するに「魅せない」ことがその美学なのです。何気なく吸っているときっと気がつかないでしょう。実は、このたばこには微妙にフレーバーが加えられているのです。そう、それはチョコレート。チョコレートフレーバーというと、甘い香りのものが巷では多いように思えます。しかし、これはビターが強くほんのりと甘さを感じるダークチョコレート、そんなアロマなのです。この隠し味的なアロマのお陰で、このたばこの香喫味の世界観が形成されているのだと感じます。バーレーの渋味がチョコレートのビターさ、ケンタッキーの味わいがカカオならではのわずかなフローラルさ、バージニアの甘味がミルクの甘さ、と言った様に。

The 1st puff is like magic. When the  smoke through the nose, soon realize that there is a secret ingredient. The secret ingredient is not a main character of the taste. It doesn't stand out, it's just a hint of an essence, it's a supporting actor for earthy burley, lil bit floral yet strong taste of kentucky, and sweetness of virginia. Probably you can't realize it when you just smoke this blend. The point is to smoke slowly. This tobacco contains flavour. It's not strong, just a hint of dark chocolate. This flavour makes me remember bitter chocolate. 1st impact is bitterness of cacao, and  "aftersmell" is sweet and milky aroma. This aroma creates a story through the bowl. That's why it makes me feel the bitter burley is like the bitterness of dark chocolate, the lil bit floral kentucky is like cacao, and the sweetie virginia is like the sweetness of milk.

このたばこは言うならば、「オトナの吸ぃーツ」なのです。強めなたばこなので、寝る前に、スコッチを片手に愉しめることでしょう。もちろん、仕事の合間の休憩時にブラックコーヒーをお供にしても良し。フレイクカットのたばこなので、詰めかたによっても味わいが変化します。よりフルに味わいたのであれば、丸めて詰める若しくは折り畳んで詰めることがおすすめです。よく揉みほぐして詰めた場合、喫味がマイルドになる傾向にあります。その時の体調やシチュエーションに合わせて詰めかたを変えることが出来る、フレイクたばこの醍醐味なのです。愉しみ方はあなた次第！

This blend is "sweets for adults". It's strong tobacco so I would like to recommend you to smoke as a nightcap with a shot of scotch whisky. Of course, it's good for black coffee while tea break at your office. This tobacco is flake cut, there are lots of ways to pack. Fold and stuff method or roll and stuff method are recommended if you like full taste. On the other hand, rubbing them out leads to mild taste. Pipe smoking is so fantastic because you can pack them based on your health and situation.
