Aesthetics value of handmade pipes

パイプに関する不思議について思ったことをエッセイ風に書く、誠にしょうもない企画。お陰様であっという間ですねぇ。第4弾になりました。今回のテーマは「魅せない美学～その2～」。今回のテーマでは、ハンドメイドパイプにつきまして私が感じたことをありのままに書いてしまおう、という企画です。このブログは筆者自身の考えに基づいているのであくまで参考程度にお読み頂けたら幸いです。

I would like to focus on handmade pipes and explain what I feel and what I think about them. This article is based on writer's thinking and prejudice, just for reference purposes only.

ハンドメイドパイプと言えど、色々あります。今回のエッセイでは、その中から柘製作所のキクチイケバナに焦点を当ててみましょう。

あくまでも個人的な解釈ですが、ハンドメイドパイプは原木という空間をいかにして切り取るか、という所に面白味があると思うのです。原本はひとつひとつ木目が異なり、グレインやバーズアイの様子に個性が出ます。パイプのエッジやサンドブラスト加工、染色はそれらを引き出すための手段なのです。それでいて、喫煙具としてのパイプでなくてはならない。ハンドメイドパイプは、芸術品であり喫煙具なのです。

There are lots of handmade pipes on our planet. In this article, I would like to zoom in on Ikebana Kikuchi. As you know, Ikebana Kikuchi pipes are one of handmade pipes of Tsuge Pipe.

In my opinion, handmade pipes are so fantastic because it's totally different between each "craftperson" to cut briar block and express grain or birds eye. Plus, edges on a pipe, sandblasting, and colouring are the ways to show the beauty of a briar. Handmade pipes are also, of course, tools for smoking tobacco. The point is…… handmade pipes are not only smoking accessories but also artworks.

この写真はキクチイケバナ068/19です。昨年当店の仲間になったパイプです。このパイプはかなりユニークなシェイプですが、ホーンの変形と言えるでしょう。ワイルドな見た目なのに優しさを感じるフォルム、思わず納得してしまう握り心地。私が思うにこれらを支えているのが「エッジ」の存在なのです。パイプを正面から見ると、ボウルからシャンクにかけて円を描く様にストレートグレインが美しく並んでいます。まるで外側のエッジに沿っているかの様です。よく見ると、ボウルトップからミドルにかけてその内側にエッジが存在することに気がつきます。一見するとわからないくらいのエッジの立ち具合、これをよく「隠れエッジ」(私だけ？)などとよく呼びます。この存在があるからこそ、外側のエッジの存在感が高まり、そのお陰でグレインの美しさが目立つのです。

This pipe is Ikebana Kikuchi 068/19. Its shape is so unique but I think it's one of horn. It's figure is so wild and also makes me feel calm and kind. Moreover, it's easy to grab. I think it is because of the edges. The edges support images which this pipe makes me feel, and charming birdseye and grain. Let's take a look at this pipe from this angle, from the bowl top to shank, straight grains stand in a quarter of a circle. An edge is like frames of this beautiful grain. Wait a second, look at it so carefully. There is a 2nd edge inside of the edge from the bowl top to the middle of the bowl. It's difficult to notice if you just see this pipe. I call edges like this "hidden edge". This edge makes the 1st edge stand out. That's why beautiful grain attracts us, pipe smokers.

別のアングルから見てみましょう。よく見ると、火皿のトップの外側に「隠れエッジ」の存在が見受けられます。これがあるお陰で、鯨が大きく口を開けているかのようなワイルドさに気づかされます。

一目見ても分からないような部位に徹底的なこだわりを持って仕上げる、それはパイプを愛する愛煙家の為をもって成した業なのです。

Why don't you look at this pipe from a different angle? Look at the bowl top, there is a "hidden edge" outside of the chamber. It's so wild and dynamic as if a whale opens his mouth.

Ms. Kikuchi creates pipes with her great passion for pipe smokers even when she curves edges, which is difficult to notice.

そして、イケバナキクチの醍醐味は実際に手にとって握ってみないとわかりません。どのようなシェイプであっても、実際に握ってみると思わず納得してしまいます。不思議と手にフィットするのです。思わず手で持ちながら喫煙したくなります。
