"Change your mind to find something new"

パイプに関する不思議について思ったことをエッセイ風に書く、誠にしょうもない企画。第5弾は「時に発想の転換は新しい出会いをもたらす」ということについて。要するに、いつも愛用しているパイプたばこがメーカー欠品だった、という状況に陥ることはよくあると思う。嗜好品であるが故に、何時どの銘柄が突然流行するか分からない。そんな時一体どうしたら良いか？一体どうやって代替品を探す？一体何を基準にする？筆者の独特な考えと偏見に満ち溢れているので、あくまで参考程度にお読み頂ければと思う。

I would like to focus on a situation when your favourite tobacco is out of stock. Nowadays sometimes tins of popular pipe tobacco are out of stock for a long time. Let's think about how to find an alternative one. This article is based on writer's thinking and prejudice, just for reference purposes only.

To tell the truth, I have to look for an alternative one for my favourite tobacco. Samuel Gawith's Cabbie's Mixture is one of my best blends. So I often smoke it before going to bed. Plus, this blend is also out of stock at the distributor. Our lives have changed dynamically this year. I hope everything recovers soon.

代替品を探す上で一体何を基準とするだろう？一番シンプルな探し方は、ブレンド内容が同一のものを探すことだろう。キャビーズミクスチャーはバージニアとペリクのブレンドなので、バージニアとペリクのブレンドの商品を探せば良いわけだ。しかし、この探し方には問題がある。というのも、ブレンド内容がシンプルであるが故に、ちょっとした配合比の違いが大きな味わいの差を生んでしまうのだ。

What should we do when we look for an alternative one for the favourite one? The most simple way is to find the same blend. Cabbie's mixture is a blend of virginia and perique, so called Vaper blend. So you should choose, for example, Solani Virginia Flake or Conell and Diehl Bayou Morning. However this way has a problem. Vaper blend is too simple. Each Vaper blend has different compounding ratios. That's why probably you may feel a different taste. It makes gaps between blending ratios in each product.

つまり、ブレンド内容が同一であるからと言って味わいが似るとは限らないのである。むしろ、全く異なると感じてしまうだろう。そこで、いっそのことブレンド内容で代用品を探すことをやめてみてはどうだろう。私が代替品を探す時は、そのたばこがもつニコチンの強さ、そして世界観を重視する。キャビーズミクスチャーの香喫味はどこか懐かしいような味わいがした、サミュエルガーウィズの中では新しい商品にも関わらず。あたかも昔から売られていたかのような、「伝統的」又は「保守的」とも言うべき味わい。そしてしっかりとしたニコチンの強さ。

In other words, "same blend" doesn't mean "same taste". Why don't you move on "plan B"? Let's forget to look for the same blend. I always look for an alternative one based on the strength of nicotine and the image or the story which the pipe tobacco shows through one bowl. To sum up, the taste of Cabbie's Mixture is so traditional or conservative, although this blend has debuted for around 5 years. It contains strong nicotine so it's not so good to smoke it when you are hungry.

整理すると、比較的ニコチンが強く、「伝統的」もしくは「保守的」なイメージをもつ味わいの銘柄を探せば良いことになる。

The point is that…you should look for a blend which has strong nicotine and a unique worldview of traditional or conservative.

そこで、私個人的にオススメしたいのがGLピースのオールドロンドンシリーズとラットレーのスターリングフレイクである。オールドロンドンシリーズには複数銘柄があるが、そのなかでもガスライトとセクスタントをオススメしたい。

勿論、ブレンド内容が全く違うしカットも違う。共通するのは、それぞれのたばこが醸し出す世界観、イメージなのである。

Therefore, I would like to recommend you to try "Old London Series" from GL Pease and Stirling Flake from Rattray. There are lots of blends however, I want you to try Gaslight and Sextant.

Of course, they are different types of blend and cut. The common thing between Cabbie's Mixture and them are images which they show through one bowl.

このブレンドはかなりユニークである。というのも、バージニア、ケンタッキー、バーレーが等しい割合でブレンドされているからだ。味わいのメインキャラクターは豊かな土壌を彷彿させるバーレーの味わいと力強いケンタッキー。バージニアの甘さは、それらを下支えしているような印象を持つ。ラットレーシリーズの中では比較的新しい商品にも関わらず、長年ベストセラーであったかの様な、どこか懐かしい喫味がする。後半になるに従って、バージニアの甘さが強くなる。1ボールを通して香喫味が物語の様に移り変わる。個人的にはアイリッシュウイスキーを片手に味わいたい。

This tobacco is so unique because it contains the same quantity of virginia, burley and kentucky. When you light up a bowl, the main character of the taste is earthy burley and strong tobacco taste of kentucky. The sweetness of virginia is a supporting actor of them. This blend debuted around 2014, so it's one of the new series of Rattray, however, its taste brings me back memories. It feels like this blend is a "long-seller" for a long time. From the 2nd half of the bowl, the sweet virginia taste becomes strong. In my opinion, I would like to enjoy this tobacco with a shot glass of Irish whiskey.

静かな夜に吸いたくなるブレンド。プラグカットは、詰め方によって喫味が変わってしまう興味深いものである。薄くスライスしてフレイクにしてもよし、細かく刻んでもよし。個人的には細かく刻んで小さめなパイプで愉しんでみてほしい。いずれにしても、このたばこの味わいを一言で表現するならは、「静けさ」だ。力強い味わいなのに落ち着いた雰囲気のある味わい。ラタキアのスモーキーさが静寂を与えてくれる。後半になるに従ってオリエントの味わいが静かに盛り上がりを魅せる。寝る前に、ブランデーを片手に味わいたい。

I would like to enjoy this tobacco on a silent night. Plug cut is so fantastic because you can slice into flakes and rub out. In my opinion, I want you to smoke this blend with a lil bit small bowl. 

This blend shows stillness. It has a strong taste however it makes me feel calm. Taste of orient gets stronger from the 2nd half of the bowl to the end. I would like to smoke this tobacco before going to bed with brandy.

このブレンドは謂わば新たな試みと言えよう。伝統的なイングリッシュミクスチャーとダークラムのデュエット。斬新なたばこなのに、味わいは懐かしさすら感じてしまう。ダークラムの深みのある甘さがラタキアのスモーキーさとマッチしている。崩れ気味のフレイクは詰め方を変えることで、香喫味が変わる。故に、その時の体調や気分、シチュエーションによって合わせることができる。着火すると感じるのはダークラムの深みとバージニアの甘さ、そしてラタキアのスモーキーさとオリエントの芳醇なアロマ。バックグラウンドにケンタッキーの強い味わいがあるので満足感のある喫煙を約束してくれる。終盤になるに従ってスモーキーなラタキアが良い意味で脇役へと変わって行く。この味わいの移り変わりは是非十分に時間をかけてゆったりと愉しみたい。勿論、片手にはベネズエララムをロックで。革の袋に入ったボトルを眺めながらのんびりと。

This tobacco has something new. It's a duet of traditional English Mixture and dark rum. It makes me feel nostalgic. Deep and sweet rum married with smoky latakia. This blend is broken flake. Its taste changes dramatically through the way to pack into the bowl. So, 3 steps method, fold and stuff method, or roll and stuff method……you can decide to pack based on your health, feeling or situation. When light up the bowl, the fusion of sweetness of the dark rum and virginia with smoky latakia and exotic oriental aroma. In the background, there is a strong taste of kentucky. To the end, latakia taste becomes 2nd actor to support sweet virginia and dark rum. I would like to enjoy this blend for a long time………with a venezuelan rum on the rocks, taking a look at the bottle in a leather bag.
