Lil story of Casino Edition

小説の最大の欠点は、文字を読むこと、つまり視覚的情報でしか物語を伝えられない点なんだと思う。(勿論、オーディオブックの場合は聴覚的情報であるが…)文字を読み、意味を理解して想像する。私みたいに小さな文字の羅列が苦手な人間には難しいことである。(長い話を聞いてると眠くなってしまう僕には到底難しいことである)

I don't like to read a novel because I have difficulty reading words. A novel only gives me information through words. Audio book doesn't fit me either because listing a long story makes me sleep.

一方、パイプたばこはどうだろう。説明文は勿論のこと、パッケージデザイン、湿度の具合、香り、そして味わい。人間のもつ感覚のほとんどを通して世界観を伝えてくれる。

ドイツのパイプたばこ会社、「コールハス」のホームページがリニューアルされた。限定たばこの説明文が個人的に面白く感じたのでご紹介しつつ僕が感じたことを記したい。彼らのたばこに対する愛、遊び心に尊敬の意を示さざるを得ないと思わずにはいられなかった。

Homepage of Kohlhase has been renewed. I found that the description of Casino Edition is so fantastic so I would like to introduce them. I couldn't stop feeling reverence for Kohlhase.

It is 9:30 p.m. when Monsieur Jolie walks into the Casino Royal bar on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

"Old Fashioned."

The bartender nods and stirs together 45ml of Michter's Rye, sugar - soaked with two squirts of Angostura Bitter - and a scoop of ice cubes.  He twirls an orange zest, places it on the glass and uses tongs to reach into a glass with plastic-like, bright red cocktail cherries.

"Please spare my drink and reach into the glass with the maraschino cherries."

"You know what's good,"

the bartender replies with a smile.

この説明文を読んで分かることがある。それは、このパイプたばこのストーリーはカジノで賭け事を行っている状況ではなく、その直前の話であるということである。人生において大きな賭けに出る時に重要なことって何だろう。それは、「景気付けの一杯」を味わうことである。ロックグラスに入った験担ぎのカクテルを肝臓へ流し込む時に、過去の想い出や経験が走馬灯の様に通りすぎてゆく。その中で、自分の一手を決めるのだ。謂わば自分自身と作戦会議を行うのである。缶のパッケージデザインはパイプのシルエットとルーレットの絵がポップに描かれているが、僕は最初カジノのルーレットの様子を描いたのであると考えていた。しかし、説明文の状況を察するに、このデザインはカジノのネオンサインをイメージしたのではないかと思う。

This story tells that it is NOT the situation of gambling roulette or black jack, it's about BEFORE betting for a desperate gamble. What is the most important thing to do before the huge chance? It's to take a glass of cocktail which has good fortune. When the drink through my throat to my liver, memories and experiences in the past are running through my head. Then, I have to decide how to bet. At first, I thought that the package design showed roulette, however it was a neon-sign of the Casino Royal Bar.

嗚呼、バーチャルリアリティ(仮想現実)なんて実用化しませんように。だって僕らパイプスモーカーはパッケージデザインをぼんやり眺めながら煙を味わうだけで十分ですから。

I don't want virtual reality. Because I, as a pipe smoker, am able to smoke a pipe while watching the package design.
