Look back at the past for now

人生において、時に過去を振り返ることは重要である。人は過去から学び、行動するのだ。また、時々思い出に浸ることで生きるというモチベーションを保つことができる。要するに人は前へ進むために振り返るんだ。振り返るということは、前へ進もうと頑張っている人のための特権なのだ。

Sometimes it's important to look back at the past. We, humans, learn something from the past then take action. It can keep our motivation to be alive through the memories. To look back is a right for persons who move forward, work hard to the future.

今回のブログのテーマは、過去に存在したパイプたばこに焦点を当てることにある。そうすることで、改めてパイプたばこの奥深さを再認識し、今後においても喫煙を愉しむためのヒントが見つかればと思う。

In this blog, I would like to focus on tins of pipe tobacco which are no longer available at Japanese market. This blog is for finding a key to have fun for "our life" right now.

ここ3、4年でパイプたばこの市場は大きく変わったと思う。個人的には余りにもつらい別れが大きかった。アメリカのパイプたばこメーカー、マクレーランドとの別れである。

Through 3 or 4 years, the market of pipe tobacco has changed. It was hard time to say goodbye…Saying goodbye to, American legendary pipe tobacco maker, McClelland.

マクレーランドは私にとってヒーローと言うべきなのか、憧れの存在であった。大学生の頃にパイプに夢中になって以来、私は常にマクレーランドの虜になっていたのかもしれない。そうなっていなかったら今の私は此処に存在しない。この業界に足を踏み入れたのもマクレーランドのお陰であると考えざるをえない。

McClelland was a hero for me. I started to smoke pipes when I was a senior at university. Since then, I was crazy about them. That's why I failed to get credit for graduation. I owe them what I am today. I dreamed of being a tobacco blender for them some day. 

私個人の見解であるが、マクレーランドの最もの魅力は、たばこ本来の味わいを活かされている点であると思う。その中でもバージニア葉を活かすことは彼らの得意技であった。

In my opinion, they were good at expressing a natural taste of tobacco leaves, especially virginia leaves.

丁度今時期、人々がクリスマスシーズンで盛り上がる中、我々パイプスモーカーはクリスマス限定たばこにワクワクしたものだ。多くのメーカーがクリスマスっぽいフレーバー系をリリースする中、唯一マクレーランドはバージニア葉本来の味わいを活かしたフレイクたばこをプロデュースしていた。そう、「クリスマスチアー」である。

I remember, in xmas season, lots of pipe smokers had been excited by tins of holiday season tobacco. Most of them were aromatic tobacco, however, Mcdonald produced virginia flake tobacco called "Christmas Cheer". 

クリスマスチアーは年によって産地や収穫された年が異なる。パイプたばこに対する愛がないと成せない技である。今回ご紹介するのは、クリスマスチアー2003。1998年に収穫されたバージニア葉を使用している。産地は"Old belt"とある。これは農業の世界では有名な専門用語で、ノースカロライナ州からバージニア州にかけて広がる地域のことをいう。よくレッドバージニアとパイプたばこに説明文で出てくることがあるが、この地域はそれらの名産地なのである。

Christmas Cheer was so fantastic because when and where that leaves were harvested were different in each year.

I would like to introduce this tin. This tin was released in 2003. It was a blend of virginia leaves harvested in 1998 in Old-belt which was located between North Carolina and Virginia. Old-belt is famous for red virginia.

缶を開けると、トマトケチャップを連想させる香りがする。バージニア葉は熟成が進むとそんな香りがするのだ。たばこ葉とトマトは植物の分類学的に近い距離にいる。つまり、たばことトマトはナス科の植物で親戚関係にあるのだ。栽培された年から計算すると、22年熟成していることになる。

マクレーランドのフレイクたばこはそれぞれが小さめである。熟成のお陰で黒に近い色になっている。

Tin note is like tomato ketchup. When virginia leaves get aged enough, its smell becomes like that. Both, tobacco leaves and tomato are solanaceae. This tobacco has been aged around 22 years.

Each piece of flake is smaller than other flakes from other makers. Thanks to aging, they look dark, almost black colour.

スマートフォンのライトを照すと、所々ガラスの様に反射する粒を確認できる。これは、バージニア葉に含まれる糖分が結晶化した証である。私がよく、フレイクたばこを折り畳んで詰めたり、丸めて詰めることを薦める理由はそこにある。よく揉み解して詰めてしまえば、結晶化した糖分が手についてしまい、美味しさが失われてしまう。

You can see the crystals on a flake with smart phone light. It is the result of crystallization of sugar in virginia leaves. That's why I often recommend packing them based on "Fold and stuff method" or "Roll and stuff method". If you rub them out, the natural sugar crystal on your fingers.

小さなフレイクを5枚ほど重ねてボウルに入れる。次に、2枚ほど少し崩して詰める。最後に、細かく解して詰め込む。普段通り大きなフレイクを折り畳んで詰めた状況に近い状態にする。

Picking up 5 pieces of flake into the bowl. Then, rub 2 pieces lil bit. Finally, rub out well then put them into the bowl.

着火すると感じるのは静寂さ。クオリティの高いたばこは一体なぜ、静寂を与えてくれるのだろう。バージニア葉の自然の甘さが奥深く口腔内に広がる。1ボールを通して香喫味が一定なのに、飽きが来ない。ゆったりとたばこが燃焼してくれるお陰で、長時間喫煙を愉しめる。

From the first light, it begins silence, so calm. Just, the natural sweetness of virginia is so deep. It fills in your mouth. It taste and aroma are stable through 1 bowl but it doesn't get you tired. You can enjoy for a long time because each flake burns slowly.

要は、エイジングのお陰で味わいが奥深くなったのだ。「時が解決してくれる」とはまさにこういうことである。エイジング自体は難しいことではない。購入したパイプたばこを常温で、湿度が高くない所に置いておくだけなのだ。

The point is "aging" makes tobacco taste deep. It's not so difficult. Just stock them in normal temperature and humidity.

当店ではその素晴らしさが分かりやすい様に、店内で1年以上寝かせた銘柄も多い。まずは、それを試してみることが第一歩となるだろう。詳しくはスタッフに聞いてみて欲しい。
