Difference between each piece of flake tobacco. 

パイプたばこはアナログすぎる製法であるが故、他のたばこよりも個体差が生じることが多い。製造ロットの差はその代表例である。だが、厳密なことを言えばフレイクたばこの場合、一枚一枚に差が生じる。これは、豚カツを食べる時に、端の部位と真ん中とで味わいが異なることと一緒である。勿論、製品によりその差の大小は異なる。(私は断然ヒレ派www)

Pipe tobacco is not high-tech, it's "analog". That's why each taste is totally different. Taste depends on each rot, as you know.

But I think that……each piece of flakes has a different taste. It's the same as a situation…when I eat tonkatsu(japanese cutlet). It's totally different between a piece of tonkatsu from the middle and from the tip. Normally, the middle one contains less fat, on the other hand, the tip one has a lot of fat. (I prefer fillet, not loin.)

ダンタバコのチューチュートレインが面白いたばこである理由はここにもあると思う。チューチュートレインは、ケージング(熱と圧力をかけて熟成させること)する前に蜂蜜のフレーバー付けを行い、そのあとフレイクカットする前にバニラのアロマを加えるらしい。そうであるが故に、平均的なロット、フレイクの味わいはバニラの甘さがほんの最初に若干後味に感じる程度である。複雑な製造工程であるが故に、他のパイプたばこよりも個体差が生じやすいように思える。

Dan tobacco's 25th anniversary blend, Choo Choo Train, is fantastic tobacco. It's a rumour but the process of production is………first of all, before the process of casing, add honey aroma. Then, add vanilla flavour before cutting. So the Choo Choo Train is complex in the process. That's why each rot has gaps.

ごく稀に、バニラのアロマが強く残ったフレイクに出会うことがある。バニラの香りと蜂蜜のフレーバーが融合し、どこかフルーティーさを感じる。後半になるに従ってバニラ感は弱くなるがフルーティーさは残る。味わいは酸味のない純粋に甘いフルーツの様。終盤に感じるのは、バージニア葉の優しい甘さ。ただし燃焼温度が高くなるとすぐに辛さに変わってしまう。

Sometimes I encounter a flake which has a strong vanilla fragrance. It tastes like a fusion of sweet vanilla and honey flavour and it's like some fruits. From the 2nd half of the bowl, vanilla flavour gets weaker but it remains fruity. In the end of the bowl, gentle sweetness of virginia on the top but careful the temperature.

要するに、パイプたばこの繊細な味わいを愉しむためには、クールスモーキングがマストである。根気強くゆったりと喫煙出来た者のみこそ許される特権なのだ。そのためには、マメなタンパーワークと吹き戻し、そして煙のスピードをゆったりとしなければならない。そのどれかがおろそかになると、過燃焼を引き起こす。さらに言えば、ジュースが出やすくなってしまう。

The point is…it's very important to smoke slowly if you want to feel the delicate taste of tobacco. Plus, do "tamper work" well, and keep slow "tempo" when you smoke and blow, to prevent overheat and juice.

詰め方は、慣れていないうちはよく揉みほぐすべきだが、繊細な味わいが分かりづらくなってしまう。折り畳んで詰めるべきか、丸めて詰めるべきかは使用するフレイクに合わせればいい。厚さが薄めのものは、丸めて詰めるといい。逆に厚めのものは、折り畳んで詰めるべし。詳しくは、当店へ。一緒に駄弁りながら吸いましょう。(※月曜日と火曜日を除く。祝日の場合はOK)

If you are a beginner of flake tobacco, you should rub them out then pack them based on the 3 steps method. Let's try the fold and stuff method or the roll and stuff method when you "graduate" from beginner. It depends on thickness, fold and stuff or roll and stuff.
